Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg is one of the first audio books I ever listened to, and it was love at first listen. Sheryl Sandberg is the COO of Facebook, and I see SO MUCH of myself in the content she wrote for this book. Like Sandberg, I too work in an industry dominated by men. I especially connected to her words about being pregnant and experiencing motherhood while working at the same time. I will say that my husband didn’t glean quite the same insights as I did out of this book, but that probably has to do mostly with perspective. Motherhood is just not something that any man is going to understand quite like a woman.
It’s a struggle, and when you work in an industry dominated by men, many times aspects of our experiences as women are overlooked not out of spite or bad intentions, but because men sometimes just don’t think of the things from a female perspective. Her discussion of the gender gap, and her techniques and suggestions to help close it, are compelling. I highly recommend this read for any woman (or man, for that matter) – working or not – who wants to better understand how women can be a part of the discussion, and ‘lean in’ to bolster their careers. Great read!
